Defence Factory Explosion Leaves 5 Dead
Five people have died and two others have been injured following an explosion and fire at a Hanwha Aerospace production facility in Daejeon, South Korea, on Monday (1/6/2026). The explosion was reported to have occurred at approximately 10:59 local time in an empty washing room. At the time of the incident, workers were engaged in cleaning equipment related to explosives.
“The fire is suspected to have occurred while workers were transferring explosives from equipment and washing tools used in the manufacturing of propulsion systems,” stated Hanwha Aerospace CEO Son Jae-il during a briefing regarding the accident, as reported by the Korea Herald on Tuesday (2/6/2026).
Firefighters managed to fully extinguish the flames by approximately 13:07 local time, more than two hours after the initial report. Search operations have been completed, while authorities have begun further evaluations of the site conditions. The Hanwha Aerospace facility in Daejeon serves as one of South Korea’s primary production hubs for the defence industry, manufacturing various strategic weaponry systems, including long-range surface-to-air missiles, dual-launch rocket systems, and rocket and air-to-surface missile propulsion technology.
All deceased victims were found within the facility affected by the blast. Meanwhile, two workers managed to escape, though one is reported to be in critical condition. Authorities received approximately 30 reports from residents who heard a loud explosion and saw plumes of smoke rising from the factory area. A total of 25 units of equipment and 85 firefighters were deployed to the scene, and a Level 1 emergency response status was activated to accelerate inter-agency coordination.
“The facility was almost completely destroyed by the fire. Due to concerns regarding the structural safety of the building, we are still conducting an assessment before the debris clearance process can continue,” said a fire official. He added that the condition of the victims’ bodies was severely damaged, necessitating assistance from the National Forensic Service for identification.
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, having received reports on the incident, immediately ordered a thorough investigation to uncover the cause of the accident and prevent future occurrences. He also requested that all government resources be mobilised to support rescue and victim handling operations. The South Korean Ministry of Employment and Labour also stated it would conduct a rapid investigation into the root cause of the accident. “We will make every effort to ensure a swift and accurate handling of the accident and prevent further incidents,” said Labour Minister Kim Young-hoon.
In response, Hanwha Group issued an official apology for the tragedy. Son Jae-il emphasised that the company would provide full support to the families of the victims and the injured workers. “We will provide all necessary support to the bereaved families and take full responsibility for the care and recovery of the injured,” he said.
This incident adds to a history of fatal accidents at the Hanwha Daejeon facility. Previously, an explosion in May 2018 killed five workers, while a similar accident in February 2019 claimed three lives. Company management expressed shock, noting that the latest incident occurred after various safety investments and automation measures had been implemented following previous accidents.
The tragedy has also impacted national political dynamics. Ahead of local elections scheduled for Wednesday, major political parties have temporarily suspended festive campaign activities. Several candidates and party leaders have cancelled campaign agendas to express condolences to the victims and their families.
