Deer farm fails to attract visitors

BOGOR: A deer breeding farm in Buana Jaya, Cariu district, Bogor regency, which also serves as a research center and tourist attraction, has failed to lure visitors, despite a cheap entrance fee of Rp 2,500.

Visitors have been scarce because the road leading to the area in bad condition, and there is no public transportation.

Teguh Purwanto, of the state forest company PT Perhutani in Bogor which manages the five-hectare site, said that the park has been open to the public since 1993.

Every year, it sells between 10 and 20 deer, Teguh said.

Some of the buyers have kept the animals, he added, while others have bought them for food.

Each deer costs about Rp 2.5 million.

The species of the deer at the farm include Cervus timorensis and Axis kuhlii from Blitar, Surabaya and Bogor. -- JP
