Dedication of Bripka Hamzah in Remote Central Sulawesi Village Leads Residents to Reject His Transfer
Bripka Hamzah Ladema has served as a Bhabinkamtibmas (community police officer) in Sonit Village, Banggai Laut Regency, Central Sulawesi, since 2011. His dedication has been so deeply felt that residents have refused to allow his transfer. Banggai Islands Police Chief AKBP Ronaldus Karurukan stated that Hamzah’s service has been extraordinary, noting that the community has directly benefited from his presence and has requested he remain at his post. ‘The community is very happy with him and has asked him to continue serving there as Bhabinkamtibmas,’ he said on Tuesday. The police chief added that Hamzah’s work brings honour to the police institution and expressed hope that he would continue to inspire fellow officers.
Local residents also expressed their appreciation. Suardikaka, a villager, said Hamzah is considered a brother, not just an officer, due to his personal approach. Another resident, Aminuddin, highlighted the economic impact of Hamzah’s initiatives, particularly in teaching seaweed cultivation and marketing, as well as encouraging coconut farming for future prosperity. Hamzah himself recounted the challenges of reaching the remote village, a journey of five to seven hours by sea from the district centre. He shared that his commitment deepened after visiting a sick elderly woman; he provided modest assistance, and she embraced him in gratitude. She passed away two weeks later, solidifying his resolve to help those in need. Hamzah remains determined to support the community’s seaweed farming efforts, offering to assist with seeds, ropes, and floats to overcome any obstacles.
