The West Java provincial government has joined forces with the Indonesian Engineers Association (PII) to address congestion in several cities across the province. One proposed measure is to develop transport systems that are environmentally friendly and serve the public interest.

West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi has invited engineers in the province to work together on social problems such as traffic congestion and flooding. He said the provincial government is drawing up spatial plans focused on providing adequate space, protecting the environment and promoting human values.

“For example, why does congestion occur in Bandung? From an engineering perspective, the planning must be wrong. And why does flooding occur? From an engineering perspective, the planning and implementation of construction must be wrong,” he said at the 44th Conference of the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations (CAFEO 44) in Bandung on Tuesday (20 October 2026).

He said the provincial government is currently preparing spatial plans and has asked engineers to improve them, with the aim of making West Java more environmentally friendly and humane.

“I told Mr Ilham earlier that congestion in West Java’s cities is growing partly because transport has not been properly organised. But we must not displace people from their jobs, including drivers,” he said.

One proposal, he said, is to give drivers new vehicles that they would own. The vehicles would be environmentally friendly and suitable for children and pregnant women, while also improving drivers’ welfare.

“This will be one of the pilot projects to be carried out jointly with PII,” he said.

PII chairman Ilham Akbar Habibie said the organisation was holding CAFEO 44 in Bandung, with participants and contributors from 11 ASEAN countries.

“There are 1,200 people here this morning. We will hold the conference for three days, discussing many issues related to ASEAN’s future development, much of which is connected to technology,” he said.

He said engineers’ work was expected to foster more inclusive and sustainable progress through industrialisation, improve quality of life and provide an adequate number of jobs.

“We chose Bandung and West Java because they are symbols of technology and industry, and Bandung is also a city that provides education in technology and industry,” he said.

Bandung is also home to world-class educational institutions and technology companies. He said PII fully supported future development, including in West Java.

“We have held many discussions and, God willing, PII will fully support West Java in addressing its future problems and challenges, for example in public transport and other areas,” he said.
