Dedi Mulyadi Monitors Sanctions on 9 Students at SMAN 1 Purwakarta for Giving the Middle Finger to Teacher
West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi has directly inspected the implementation of sanctions against nine students at SMAN 1 Purwakarta after a case of insulting their teacher went viral on social media. The sanctions are intended as a form of guidance to prevent the students from repeating their actions. Viewed through the KDM YouTube channel, Dedi ensured that the sanctions are proceeding in line with their developmental objectives. The students are engaging in activities such as cleaning the school environment, greeting students in the morning, and participating in religious guidance according to their respective beliefs. One teacher at SMAN 1 Purwakarta explained that the students’ daily activities begin with community service work, followed by religious activities such as Quran recitation and reading for Muslim students. Meanwhile, non-Muslim students receive guidance in accordance with their religious teachings. Dedi Mulyadi also inquired about the parents’ response to the sanctions. According to the school, the parents have accepted the decision and raised no objections. The students are reportedly undergoing the sanctions with awareness and showing remorse for their actions. “But the main point is that the parents didn’t complain?” Dedi asked. “Not at all, sir; (the parents) accept it,” revealed the teacher from SMAN 1 Purwakarta. According to the school, the students even feel helped by the applied guidance approach. They are carrying out the activities voluntarily, including tasks to clean school facilities such as toilets, without any pressure. Dedi emphasised that the primary goal of the sanctions is not to punish harshly, but to shape the students’ character to become better. He assured that the entire guidance process is taking place in conditions that do not cause psychological pressure on the students. In addition, Dedi revealed that all nine students are planned to participate in a follow-up guidance programme at a military barracks in June 2026 along with several other students, including OSIS board members. On the other hand, the teacher who was the victim of the insult has previously stated forgiveness for the students. Nevertheless, the guidance process continues as part of character education in the school environment.
