Dede Yusuf: Proposal to Rename West Java to 'Tatar Sunda' Unnecessary

The Deputy Chairman of Commission II of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), Dede Yusuf, believes that the proposal to change the name of West Java Province to Sunda Province or Tatar Sunda is not necessary at this time. According to him, changing the province’s name has the potential to create new issues as it relates to both historical and cultural aspects.

“Sunda should ideally be something more egalitarian. Especially being close to DKI [Jakarta]. So in a historical context, in my personal opinion, it is not yet necessary. However, if it is to be proposed, it must be submitted through legislation,” said D’ede Yusuf on Wednesday (8/7/2026).

Dede explained that the renaming of a province cannot be decided solely at the regional level. He noted that any changes to names or regional boundaries must undergo discussion and approval by the Indonesian House of Representatives.

“The laws governing Provinces or Regencies/Cities must be decided in the DPR if there is a desire to change names, boundaries, or similar matters. Therefore, from our perspective, there is currently no such movement; it remains merely a proposal,” he added.
