Decree 'saves' public from liquor

PADANG, West Sumatra: Governor Hasan Basri Durin assured local Moslems that his decree on liquor is aimed at "saving" them from the danger of alcohol.

The decree regulates the production, distribution and consumption of liquor. "Now alcoholic drinks can be sold only in certain places for certain people to buy," he said.

Basri said he is aware many people believe his action further institutionalizes liquor sales, despite Moslems' strong objection to it. Liquor sales are forbidden under Islamic teachings.

Before the decree was issued, alcoholic beverages were widely available at roadside stalls for everyone, including students, to buy.

The governor also denied that the provincial government intends to place liquor sales on the list of the region's indigenous revenues. (32)
