Decile Not Reflecting Economic Condition? Here Is How to Update It via Smartphone
The decile position within the National Single Socio-Economic Data (DTSEN) has recently come under public scrutiny, as it is directly linked to the mapping of family welfare levels. This data is also utilised by the government as a primary reference for determining the targets of various programmes, such as social assistance (bansos).
Simply put, a decile represents a group that indicates the relative welfare position of a family compared to others. The DTSEN divides families into 10 groups, ranging from decile 1, which represents the lowest relative welfare group, to decile 10, which represents the highest.
However, a decile position is not a figure that citizens can arbitrarily choose or change themselves. If the information within the DTSEN is deemed not to reflect a family’s current condition, the appropriate course of action is to submit a data update request through channels provided by the government.
Such updates are vital because a family’s socio-economic condition can change. Changes in employment, housing conditions, asset ownership, family composition, education, health, and various other characteristics are all factors considered in the ranking process.
Nevertheless, a change in a single indicator does not automatically result in a change in decile. Therefore, how can one apply for a DTSEN decile change if the recorded data does not match the actual situation? Here are the official channels that can be used:
- Submit an Update via Cek Bansos
Citizens can use the Cek Bansom application or the Ministry of Social Affairs’ Cek Bansos channel to submit information that needs updating. The official Cek Bansos channel currently uses the DTSEN as its data source. It is essential to ensure that the information provided matches the actual conditions. The application is not intended to select a specific decile, but rather to correct the socio-economic information that serves as the basis for ranking. Once the proposal is submitted, the data will become part of the update process. In certain circumstances, the submitted information may be followed by a field inspection or ground check to ensure accuracy.
- Visit the Village or Sub-district Office
If one prefers to handle the matter in person, citizens can submit a data update request through the village or sub-district government. Applications can also be made through the Social Affairs Office (Dinas Sosial) in accordance with the mechanisms available in their respective regions.
