Debt traps 6,000 teachers
BOJONEGORO, East Java: Some 6,000 elementary school teachers in this regency are so riddled with debt that they cannot do their jobs properly, a local official said.
Chief of local education and culture office Muh. Sujud told Antara this week that some of the teachers must spend their entire monthly salary repaying their debts.
Although there is a regulation limiting the amount that can be deducted from a teacher's monthly salary to 50 percent, teachers insist on borrowing money from loan sharks, he said.
Sujud said the government would tighten supervision of money lending activities at schools. (kod)
