Debate rages on regional reps revival
JAKARTA: The 90-member working body of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) opened its first meeting on Thursday with a clash over its membership composition.
Legislators from Golkar and the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan) voiced discontent over the revival of the 46-strong Regional Representatives Faction.
They questioned the formula made by faction leaders to determine the composition of the new membership, but calmed down after hearing an explanation by other legislators.
MPR Speaker Amien Rais said that the working body would carry out its duties until July 30.
The activities of the working body will include plenary meetings, consultative meetings, and public hearings.
In the next six months, legislators will continue amending crucial articles relating to the second round of the presidential election, religious affairs, and the establishment of the constitutional commission.--JP
