Death toll rise to 11 from 10
The death toll from Tuesday's Marriott bombing rose to 11 after
another Silver Bird taxi driver, Edi Haryanto, 40, died on Sunday
at 9:30 a.m. at the Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital.
During the blast, in which 148 persons were also injured, a
total of five taxi drivers, one private driver and three security
guards were killed, leaving their families confused about how to
face the future.
A Dutch citizen, Hans Winkelmolen, the former general manager
of Rabobank Indonesia, was also killed. His body has already been
repatriated.
When the explosion took place, Edi was waiting in line for
passengers along with the other drivers. He suffered severe burns
to up to 80 percent of his body.
"Edi's death increases the number of fatalities suffered by
our company to five. It's very tragic," said PT Blue Bird's
president director Purnomo Prawiro.
Edi had worked for the Blue Bird group for six years.
He is survived by his wife Nurbaiti, 39, and two daughters,
Indah Nurmaningsih, 20, and Sri Wulandari, 18.
A close friend of Edi's, Hasanuddin, said that he remembered
Edi as a very quiet and religious man.
"Even though we were waiting for passengers, Edi never missed
saying his prayers at prayer time. His wife told me that the
night before the explosion, Edi could not sleep. He said he felt
very hot," he said.
Like the families of the other Silver Bird victims, Purnomo
promised Edi's that the company would provide scholarships for
the two daughters.
"We will also provide some Rp 25 million in working capital
for his wife to start a new business to maintain her family,"
said Purnomo.
A mass prayer will take place at the blast site on Monday at
around 9 a.m. It will be led by Jakarta Governor Sutiyoso. -- JP
