Death Toll from Nepal-Tibet Flash Floods Reaches 939, with 3,925 Still Missing

Disaster management authorities have revealed that the devastating flash floods near the Nepal-China border have killed at least 939 people. Meanwhile, the number of missing in the country has fallen to 3,925 as rescue efforts enter their sixth day.

According to AFP on Monday (31/8/2026), Chinese state media previously confirmed 16 deaths and 546 people missing in Tibet, bringing the overall toll to 955 dead and 4,471 missing.

The list of missing persons in Nepal includes 592 foreign nationals. However, the number of workers missing at the hydropower plant project site—which was directly struck by the powerful floodwaters—has fallen to 639 from the previous figure of 933.

Nepal’s disaster management agency recorded 3,333 of its citizens missing in the latest data update.

That figure includes 1,158 people missing in Nuwakot district and a further 865 whose whereabouts remain unknown in Rasuwa district.

Among the missing are 45 Nepalese army soldiers, 38 police officers, and 18 customs and immigration officials.

In India, authorities in Uttar Pradesh state said they have recovered 17 bodies from rivers flowing from Nepal; the bodies are believed to be flood victims.

Indian authorities are working to identify the bodies, and this number has not yet been included in the reported death toll.
