Death toll from Nepal floods and landslides reaches 623

The death toll from flash floods and landslides in Nepal reached 623 on Saturday, as search teams continued evacuations and recovered bodies of victims swept away by overflowing rivers.

Nepalese police confirmed they have found 616 bodies, including 233 in Chitwan and 158 in East Nawalparasi. Both areas are among the worst affected by the disaster.

The toll also includes dozens of people found in Gorkha, Dhading and Nuwakot after the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers burst their banks. The two major rivers originate in the Himalayan region.

Bodies of victims have even been found as far as the border area with India.

At least 638 people remain missing in Nepal, including 511 foreign nationals.

Meanwhile, seven people have been reported dead and 554 others remain missing in China, according to the state news agency Xinhua.

Nepalese authorities reported that 2,301 people have been rescued or received treatment for injuries. Most survivors were found in the districts of Nuwakot and Rasuwa.

Police data shows 27 officers remain unaccounted for. A total of 4,811 personnel have been deployed across affected areas to handle search, evacuation and post-disaster recovery efforts.
