Death Toll from Nepal Flash Floods Reaches 623

The death toll from flash floods and landslides in Nepal has reached 623 as of Saturday (29/8). Search and evacuation efforts are underway to recover bodies swept away by river currents.

Nepal Police confirmed that 616 bodies have been recovered, including 233 in Chitwan and 158 in East Nawalparasi. Both areas are among the worst affected by the disaster.

Dozens of bodies have also been found in Gorkha, Dhading, and Nuwakot following the overflow of the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers, two major rivers originating in the Himalayan region.

Police also reported that bodies of flash flood victims have been found as far as the border area with India.

As a result of the flash floods, 638 people are still reported missing in Nepal, including 511 foreign nationals. A further 554 people remain missing in China, according to the state news agency Xinhua. Nepali authorities reported that 2,301 people have been rescued and are receiving treatment. Survivors were found in the districts of Nuwakot and Rasuwa.

A total of 4,811 personnel have been deployed across affected areas to handle search, evacuation, and recovery operations following the flash floods on the Nepal-China border.
