The death toll from the magnitude 7.7 earthquake in Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) continues to rise. The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) recorded as of Tuesday (25/8/2026) that 103 people have died.

“Today we recorded an additional three fatalities, bringing the total to 103 for today,” said Berton Suar Pelita Panjaitan, Acting Head of the Data, Information and Disaster Communication Centre at BNPB, during a press conference broadcast on BNPB’s YouTube channel on Tuesday (25/8/2026).

Berton detailed that the fatalities are spread across several areas: 41 in Manggarai, 34 in East Manggarai, 13 in Nagekeo, 6 in Sikka, 5 in Ngada, 3 in Ende, and 1 in West Manggarai.

In addition to the fatalities, the number of injured has also increased. BNPB recorded 1,666 people injured as a result of the earthquake.

“We received an additional 63 injured people, bringing the total we have recorded to 1,666,” he said.

The earthquake has also displaced more than 185,000 people. BNPB recorded a total of 185,131 people still in shelters, both independently and in centralised evacuation sites.

“As of today we have recorded 185,131 displaced people, both independent evacuees and those in centralised shelters, with 4,804 new evacuees recorded today,” he added.

Berton said the number of evacuees could still increase because aftershocks are still being felt in NTT.

According to BMKG records, 7,029 aftershocks have occurred since the main M 7.7 earthquake. Of the thousands of aftershocks, the largest magnitude reached 6.2.

“Currently BMKG has recorded 7,029 aftershocks, with the largest magnitude at 6.2 and the smallest at 1.1, and today 141 tremors were felt. This pattern will continue for 3 to 4 weeks after the main earthquake occurred,” he said.

The continuing aftershocks have also triggered panic and prompted residents to seek shelter.

“We continue to receive additional evacuees. It is understandable that when earthquakes keep occurring, these aftershocks cause panic and deep trauma for residents experiencing the seismic activity,” he continued.
