The number of fatalities from the powerful twin earthquakes that shook Venezuela has risen to 589, while 2,980 others have been injured, according to Acting President Delcy Rodriguez on Friday. “Unfortunately, 589 people have died and 2,980 are injured,” President Rodriguez stated during a meeting broadcast by the teleSUR television channel. On Thursday, Health Minister Carlos Alvarado noted that the most critical situation remains in La Guaira state, which has recorded the highest number of deaths and injuries. Alvarado explained that the national emergency response mechanism was activated immediately after the quakes, with more than 5,000 medical workers, including over 1,200 doctors, deployed to provide aid in the hardest-hit areas. Two strong earthquakes, measuring magnitude 7.2 and 7.5, struck Venezuela on Wednesday, followed by 30 aftershocks. The disaster destroyed numerous homes, damaged infrastructure and hospitals, and forced the closure of the country’s main airport.
