Death Toll from Bantargebang Landfill Collapse Rises to Six, Found in Drainage Channel
Bekasi — A joint rescue team discovered another fatality from a landfill collapse at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Facility (TPST) in Bekasi City on Monday afternoon, 9 March 2026.
With this discovery, the death toll has increased to six. Search and rescue (SAR) teams are continuing to search for one additional missing person.
Jakarta SAR Office Head Desiana Kartika Bahari stated that the victim was found buried under rubbish in an area near a drainage channel.
According to Desiana, the deceased victim has been identified as male. “The victim has been identified as Hardianto. The victim has subsequently been taken to Polri Kramat Jati Hospital,” she said.
During the search operation, the SAR team also received information that two persons previously reported missing have been found safe. “At 16:57 WIB we received information from the police that the victims named Ato and Dofir are safe and have returned to their respective homes,” said Desiana.
With this development, one victim remains unaccounted for: Riki, also known as Buyung.
“The search will now be more narrowed because several of the victims found were in close proximity to each other, particularly victims five and six,” said Desiana.
She added that the location where the victims were found is believed to be an area where residents typically gather. “According to information, there is a small warung shop there, and people were likely gathered in that vicinity,” she explained.
“All vehicles have already been accounted for and are no longer buried. Currently we are focusing on locating the remaining victim,” she added.
During the search operation, the rescue team did not face adverse weather conditions. However, the hazardous terrain posing health risks to field personnel remains a primary concern.
