Death Toll Continues to Rise After NTT Earthquake, BNPB Chief Says 38 People Have Died as of This Afternoon

The Head of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Lieutenant General TNI Suharyanto, said that as of Saturday (15/8/2026) at 15.00 WIB, 38 people had been recorded dead as a result of the 7.7-magnitude earthquake centred in Nagekeo Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).

“The death toll as of 15.00 today is recorded at 38 people,” Suharyanto said during an online press conference in Jakarta on Saturday.

Meanwhile, two people suffered serious injuries and 11 others sustained minor injuries. In addition, approximately two thousand people have been displaced independently. The agency also recorded several roads that had suffered landslides due to the earthquake, and dozens of homes that sustained heavy, moderate and light damage.

As for health facilities, one hospital in Maumere was recorded as damaged, along with many community health centres. “The Minister of Health also informed us that many community health centres were damaged, and only one hospital was damaged, namely in Maumere,” Suharyanto said.

Meanwhile, five airports were affected by the major earthquake. “Five airports were affected, but not the runways. The damage affected the terminal buildings at five airports, whether classified as light, moderate or heavy damage,” he said.
