Death of Try Sutrisno: TNI Loses One of Its Greatest Soldiers
Jakarta—TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto has expressed deep condolences over the death of retired General Try Sutrisno, former Commander of the Armed Forces and Indonesia’s sixth Vice President.
“On behalf of the entire TNI family, I express my deepest condolences over the passing of General Try Sutrisno,” Agus told Kompas.com on Monday (2 March 2026).
Agus prayed that the deceased would be accepted by Allah and forgiven for his sins, and hoped that the bereaved family would be given strength and patience.
According to Agus, Try Sutrisno was a disciplined and focused soldier who served as a role model for future generations of the TNI. In various meetings, the late general was known for offering advice for the benefit of the armed forces institution.
“The deceased was a disciplined, focused soldier and a role model. In every meeting with me, he always offered counsel for the good of the TNI,” Agus said.
Agus also recalled Sutrisno’s commitment and devotion to the TNI. Despite his declining physical condition, Sutrisno continued to make efforts to attend various TNI activities.
“The deceased always attended whenever there were TNI activities, even though he had to be assisted in walking,” Agus said.
“The TNI has lost one of its greatest soldiers,” Agus remarked.
Sutrisno died at RSPAD Gatot Soebroto Military Hospital in Jakarta on Monday (2 March 2026). His death was confirmed by former RSPAD Chief Lieutenant General Albertus Budi Sulistya.
According to plans, the deceased will be given a funeral prayer at Masjid Sunda Kelapa and buried at Kalibata Heroes Cemetery on the same day.
