Dear Sellers, E-commerce Trading Now Requires a Business Identification Number
All business actors, from micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to large corporations, are now required to have a Business Identification Number (NIB) to sell on e-commerce platforms. This obligation was issued by the government through Minister of Trade Regulation (Permendag) Number 19 of 2026 concerning the Implementation of Business Trade Through Electronic Systems (PMSE), which came into effect on 8 June 2026.
Minister of Trade Budi Santoso urged business actors to promptly obtain an NIB, confirming that the process is free of charge and can be completed online via the Online Single Submission (OSS) system. Business actors only need to prepare identity data and business information, then create an account and apply for the NIB through the https://oss.go.id website. This ease of process is expected to encourage more business actors to complete their business legality.
‘We ask all platforms to inform, assist, and connect business actors with the OSS system so that the public becomes more aware of how easy the NIB registration process is,’ Budi stated on Wednesday (17/6/2026), as reported by detikFinance. ‘By having an NIB, business actors contribute to upholding regulations while opening wider access opportunities to financing, as well as coaching and partnership programmes in an increasingly competitive digital market,’ Budi added.
With the enforcement of Permendag Number 19 of 2026, Budi explained, every business actor conducting trading activities through electronic commerce platforms is required to have a business permit, at least in the form of an NIB. Furthermore, electronic commerce platform operators are also obliged to reject the registration of merchants who do not yet have a business permit in accordance with statutory provisions.
To provide adequate adaptation space, the government has set a grace period for fulfilling the business licensing obligation of 18 months for merchants already selling on platforms and 6 months for new merchants. Budi expressed hope that this grace period would allow the transition towards a more orderly digital trade ecosystem to proceed smoothly without burdening business actors.
