Deal! Portrait of Bahlil Securing Oil and LPG Supplies from Russia
Indonesia has confirmed it will receive supplies of oil and LPG from Russia as a result of the working visit by President Prabowo Subianto and Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia to the country. This certainty is part of the government’s efforts to strengthen national energy resilience amid uncertain global dynamics. In a meeting on Wednesday (14/4/2026), Bahlil met with Russian Energy Minister Sergey Tsivilev to follow up on high-level discussions between Prabowo and Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin the previous day. The meeting discussed concrete opportunities for energy cooperation that can be immediately realised, particularly regarding crude oil and LPG supplies. Bahlil stated that the outcomes of the discussions showed significant progress, with Indonesia having the opportunity to increase its crude oil reserves as well as obtain LPG supplies from Russia. He assessed that this initial agreement is a positive step in ensuring national energy availability. The meeting was also attended by several Russian energy companies such as Rosneft, Ruschem, Zarubezhneft, and Lukoil, where Indonesia opened up broader cooperation opportunities. The explored schemes include government-to-government (G2G) and business-to-business (B2B) collaborations, encompassing crude storage development, long-term supplies, to explorations in nuclear energy and the mineral sector. Bahlil emphasised that this collaboration is expected to provide certainty for national energy resilience. Meanwhile, the Russian side expressed readiness to become a strategic partner for Indonesia in providing oil, gas, and developing nuclear power plants. The Indonesian government views this partnership as an important step to maintain economic stability while driving growth amid global challenges.
