Deaf Community in Cianjur Learns Barista Skills and Coffee Shop Business Tips
Deaf participants in Cianjur took part in a training programme titled ‘Development of a Deaf Café Based on Shared Spaces: Strengthening Creative Economy Independence through Entrepreneurship Training for the Deaf Community in Cianjur’, led by the Community Service Team (PkM) of Universitas Mercu Buana. The event was held over two days, 15–16 August 2026, in Cianjur Regency, West Java. The programme was initiated by PkM Team Leader Hibah Rachmita Maun Harahap and fully supported by UMB student teams and disability community partners.
The first day, Saturday (15/8), opened with a presentation by Fatimah Yasmin Hasni on the topic ‘Strengthening Visual Literacy for Branding the Tedasri Deaf Café.’ She examined the importance of consistency in colour, typography, and visual elements in media application and café promotion to ensure strong competitiveness in the modern market.
In the afternoon session, 25 deaf participants from Cianjur took part directly in barista training. The intensive training was led by local café entrepreneur Murni and her expert team, who introduced coffee equipment and basic techniques for producing quality coffee.
On the second day, Sunday (16/8), the training focus shifted to fundamental business concepts. The morning session was led by Sugeng Santoso, who presented material on ‘Introduction to Café Business Ideas.’ Drawing on his experience as Chair of the BEKRAF Strategic Planning Team (2015-2019) and co-founder of Food Startup Indonesia, he motivated participants on the use of café-style co-working spaces as hubs for multi-sector collaboration, including design, photography, visual communication design, and culinary arts.
In the afternoon, the programme concluded with an advanced independent barista training session to ensure the 25 deaf participants had truly mastered the skills taught the previous day.
