Deadly Storms Wreak Havoc in India's Financial Capital, Multiple Casualties Reported
At least six people were reported dead, including five children, after several buildings collapsed in the eastern suburbs of Mumbai, India, on Sunday (5/7/2026). The tragedy marks the latest fatalities from an extreme storm disaster that has flooded the city and paralysed mass transport systems.
Local civil authorities confirmed the disaster occurred in the densely populated Mankhurd area, where two to three multi-storey houses collapsed instantly after being battered by heavy rain. In addition to causing loss of life, the very high rainfall intensity also triggered a landslide on the main motorway connecting Mumbai with Pune.
The conditions forced authorities to completely close the motorway and cut off vehicle traffic between the two major cities. Local television footage showed chunks of destroyed construction debris scattered on the roads, while rainwater was seen gushing from the roof of a motorway tunnel.
The impact of the extreme weather not only severed land transport access but also disrupted flight operations at the airport. The disaster even forced mass cancellations of long-distance train schedules connecting strategic cities.
Local media showed residents forced to wade through floodwaters inundating the city’s main thoroughfares. As a result of the emergency situation, all school and college operations were officially suspended on Monday.
According to local authorities, incidents of falling trees due to strong winds since the end of last month have also killed at least three residents.
The city, which serves as India’s financial centre, recorded rainfall exceeding 100 mm, with some points monitored experiencing extreme downpours reaching 161 mm.
India’s meteorological agency projected the potential for light-intensity rain across many areas of the capital. “We urge residents to remain vigilant as the city’s infrastructure remains vulnerable to damage from subsequent bad weather,” it stated.
