A devastating fire at a two-storey house in the Petemon Timur area of Surabaya has resulted in tragedy. A four-year-old girl died after being unable to escape the flames that engulfed the upper floor of the property.

The incident occurred on Jalan Petemon Timur, Kupang Krajan Village, Sawahan District, on Monday, 22 June 2026. The victim, identified by the initials KKS (4), was inside the house with her sibling, AAS (11), when the fire broke out.

In a desperate attempt to survive, the older sibling smashed a window and jumped out of the burning house. However, the four-year-old was unable to exit the second floor and perished in the blaze.

M Rokhim, Head of the Firefighting Division at the Surabaya Fire and Rescue Service (DPKP), stated that the emergency call was received at 2:17 p.m. local time. Fire crews arrived at the scene within approximately five minutes, but the fire had already grown significantly.

“When officers arrived, the fire was already quite large and was only burning the second floor of the house,” Rokhim said.

The house was normally occupied by the two children, their father, and their grandmother. At the time of the incident, however, only the two children were at home. Trapped by the fire on the upper floor, the 11-year-old took the drastic decision to break the window glass and leap to safety.

“The older sibling managed to save herself by breaking the window glass and jumping out of the burning house,” Rokhim explained. Although she survived, AAS suffered abrasions and shock. Medical personnel from the Sawahan Community Health Centre who arrived at the scene provided immediate treatment until her condition stabilised.

To extinguish the fire, the Surabaya DPKP deployed 10 fire engines and five rescue units. The firefighting operation faced challenges as access to the location was via a narrow alleyway only about 1.5 metres wide.
