Davis Cup players crash in Indonesia Futures-1

JAKARTA (JP): Davis Cup team members Febi Widhiyanto and Edy
Kusdaryanto crashed out of the Indonesia Futures-1 on Thursday in
the second round of the men's singles at Kemayoran tennis center
in Central Jakarta.

Febi was outclassed by top seed Artem Derepasko of Russia 5-7,
2-6, while Edy could only win the first set before giving in to
Kwon Oh-hee of South Korea 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

Only veteran and double specialist Bonit Wiryawan still
survives in the US$15,000 men's singles event after beating
qualifier Chung Seong-yoon of South Korea 7-5, 7-6 (7/4). In
Friday's quarterfinals he will challenge second seeded Frantisek
Cermak of the Czech Republic, who beat Le Minh of the United
States 6-2, 6-2.

Derepasko will challenge Zbynek Mlynarik of Austria, who upset
another Indonesian player Adrian Raturandang 7-6 (7/6), 6-2. Kwon
will meet Jarkko Nieminen of Finland, who beat qualifier Anton
Kokurin of Uzbekistan 6-1, 6-0.

In the men's doubles, Edy and Hendri Susilo Pramono stopped
the progress of the mixed pair of Derepasko and Jaroslav Levinsky
from the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-4.

The Davis Cup team members will meet the second seeded South
African pair of Rik De Voest and Haydn Wakefield, who beat
Australian Kane De Whurst and Ashley Ford 7-5, 6-7 (1/7), 7-6
(7/2) in the first round on Thursday.

Long-time partners Bonit and Sulistyo Wibowo from Indonesia
also advanced to the second round after an easy 6-0, 6-3 win over
the South Korean pair of Han Min-kyu and Lee Sang-hoon.

Bonit and Sulistyo will face Chung Hee-seok and Chung Hee-sung
of South Korea, who beat Adrian and his partner Yoon yong-il of
South Korea 4-6, 6-7 (3/7).

Febi and Suwandi were out of luck and lost to Frantisek Babej
and Vladimir Platenik of Slovakia 4-6, 4-6.

In the Women's Circuit-2, veteran Irawati Moerid Iskandar and
Wukirasih Sawondari cruised to the quarterfinals. Irawati beat
qualifier Anouk Sterk from the Netherlands 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, while
Wukirasih upset South Korean Chung Yun-jin 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Irawati will meet Jeon Mi-ra of South Korea, who beat the 1999
Southeast Asian (SEA) Games women's singles gold medalist
Maricris Fernandez of the Philippines 6-1, 3-6, 6-2. Wukirasih
will play qualifier Kim Eun Sook of South Korea, who overcome
Satomi Kinjo of Japan 6-3, 6-3 in the second round of the
US$10,000 event.

Pairing each other in the doubles event, Irawati and Wukirasih
proceeded to the second round after a 6-3, 7-5 win over the
Japanese pair of Sache Umehara and Mao Yamanaka. Irawati and
Wukirasih, fifth seeded in this event, will met Choi Young-ja and
Kim Eun-sook of South Korea, who beat Natalie Grandin and Lara
Van Rooyen of South Africa 3-6, 6-3, 6-0.

Fed Cup team members Yayuk Basuki and Wynne Prakusya had no
difficulties beating the eleventh seeded pair of Chung Yang-jin
and Lee Eung-jeong of South Korea 6-1, 6-0. Yayuk and Wynne, who
are expected to earn wild cards for the 2000 Olympic Games, will
face Marylene Losey of Switzerland and Nicole Melch of Austria,
who beat the Slovakian pair of Svetla Bozicnik and Nina
