JAKARTA - A young girl has died after allegedly being shot by the West Papua National Liberation Army-Free Papua Organisation (TPNPB-OPM) in Camp Wini Kalikuluk at Kilometre 69, Tembagapura, Mimika Regency, Central Papua.

The Head of Information for the TNI Habema Operational Command, Lieutenant Colonel Infantry M. Wirya Arthadiguna, stated that the shooting was suspected to have been carried out by the OPM group led by Guspi Waker.

“This brutal act, allegedly carried out by the OPM group led by Guspi Waker, not only sows fear but also robs the future of an innocent girl aged around 12-15 years,” Wirya said in his statement on Saturday (9/5/2026).

In addition to the fatality, another resident sustained a gunshot wound to the left calf and is still receiving medical treatment.

Wirya explained that prior to the incident, TNI task force personnel on duty in the MP 69 area detected suspicious movements around the location.

“From the monitoring results, two gunshots were heard from the direction of Camp David across the river, suspected to be from the OPM group led by Guspi Waker,” he revealed.

The group then fired shots again towards the positions of the TNI task force personnel around Camp Wini Kalikuluk.

During the evacuation process, personnel found a young girl with a gunshot wound to her left shoulder near Camp Wini. The victim was then taken to the nearest health facility.

“However, fate had other plans. On the way to the health facility, specifically on the MP 69 main road, the girl was declared dead due to the gunshot wound she sustained,” Wirya said.

“The actions taken by the personnel followed procedures and were carried out in a measured manner to minimise the risk of civilian casualties. The safety of residents remains the top priority,” he added.

To date, the TNI Territorial Task Force continues to conduct security patrols and in-depth investigations related to the shooting.

The TNI is also increasing monitoring of the activities of the OPM group led by Guspi Waker in the Kalikuluk area and surroundings.
