of optical tranmission equipment
Datang Telecom Technology Co. Ltd. (DTT), a large-scale high-
tech enterprise from China, has sent an exhibition team to the
Techno Pre-Eminence -- Connectivity Indonesia 2002 with a mission
of grabbing a share of Indonesia's telecommunications market.
"By taking part in Techno Pre-Eminence -- Connectivity
Indonesia 2002, Datang Telecom will do its best to enter the
Indonesian market," said Wang Pei, the leader of the exhibition
team.
Techno Pre-Eminence -- Connectivity Indonesia 2002 is a four-
day event for an international exhibition and conference on
information and communication technology (ICT), which is to open
at the Jakarta Convention Center on Monday.
Wang, who is also the project manager of DTT's international
department, said that her company, in cooperation with its local
partner, PT Netwave Maju Abadi, aimed to provide advanced
equipment, technology and services for the construction of
Indonesia's telecommunications projects.
At this week's exhibition, she said, her company would focus
on the promotion of its optical transmission equipment.
The products to be exhibited were TranSmartTM Series Optical
Transmission Equipment, Network Access Equipment, Private Line
Access Equipment and Ethernet Switch (desktop), she said.
The TranSmartTM Series Optical Transmission Equipment
consisted of SDH Optical Transmission System (STM-16 rack type)
and SDH Optical Transmission System (STM-1 desktop), while the
Network Access Equipment included LinkMasterA-100TM ADSL
Equipment (desktop). The Private Line Access Equipment would
include SCAPCM PCM Desktop Equipment (desktop).
"Besides that, Datang Telecom will also introduce its
microwave equipment, switching systems and other products to the
potential Indonesian buyers," Wang added.
Apart from microwave equipment, switching systems, DTT's main
products also include transmission equipment, access network
equipment, mobile communication systems, data communication
equipment, software and microelectronics.
DTT, which has been established by scholars graduated from
U.S. universities and is affiliated to an academy, offers
products with a competitive edge not only in term of price-wise
but also in quality-wise because its products are developed
through research and development.
DTT was founded through investment capital and mainly
initiated by the China Academy of Telecommunications Technology
(CATT) of Ministry of Information Industry. CATT, the controlling
shareholder of the company, was founded in 1957 and is the
largest professional research institution of telecommunications
technology with the strongest R&D capability and widest R&D
fields. It has been shouldering the task of innovations and
developments in the field of information and communications
technology.
The company began as the Xi'an Datang Telephone Corporation, a
joint venture between CATT, the l0th Research Institute of the
MPT and International Telephone and Teledata, Inc.(ITTl), a
company begun by a group of Chinese scholars in the United
States. Thus, DTT is a high-tech telecommunications company
formed through the strength of a national research institute,
coupled with the expertise of Chinese scholars studying abroad.
On Aug. 7, l998, DTT issued a total of l00 million A-share
stocks on the Shanghai Stock Exchange at 5.98 yuan per share, out
of which 75 million shares went to the public, l5 million to
funds, and l0 million to employees. The company held an opening
ceremony on Aug. 28, l998, and registered itself in Beijing's
Haidian New Technology Development and Trial Zone on Sept. 2l,
l998. One month later, the company issued public shares on the
Shanghai Stock Exchange.
DTT thus far has presented a series of state-of the art and
world-level products in such fields as mobile communication
system and equipment, large-capacity SPC switches, optical
communication equipment, digital microwave equipment, full-
service access network equipment, telecommunication software and
system integration, and integrated circuits.
It has also opened new service fields like system integration
and telecommunication VAS. During the following two years since
the company was listed on the stock exchange, the company has
obtained 41 network entry certificates from the Ministry of
Information Industry, nine from the Broadcasting and
Telecommunication Ministry and 13 from the military.
Facing the tide of whole world economic integration and the
challenge of China's entry into the World Trade Organization
(WTO), DTT seeks to expand its business, select and unite the
outstanding cooperation with other manufacturers, establish
strategic cooperation alliances, reduce operating costs,
strengthen its competition ability and resist market risks.
DTT, therefore, is inviting communication electronics
(software and hardware) suppliers, as well as producing and
processing manufacturer, for cooperation with mutual benefits.
DTT boasts its strength on its high concern on R&D. It uses
the majority of its investment capital as funding for key
projects and 10 percent of its revenues for R&D activities
Employees engaged in R&D account for 4l percent of the company's
total staff. In addition to the R&D departments in all of its
subsidiary companies, DTT has established two R&D centers in
Beijing and Shanghai.
DTT will even become the largest modern R&D and manufacturing
base for telecommunications equipment in northwest China after
the completion of the construction of is manufacturing park on
almost 200,000 squaremeters in Xi'an. After completion, the
manufacturing capability of the park will be as much as six
million lines of switches and 250,000 channels of mobile
communications systems per year, and the productive capacity of
microwave transmission and wireless communications products will
reach a large scale. The first phase of the construction on
43,000 squaremeters of land, including an R&D building,
manufacturing workshops and necessary facilities, has been
completed in l999.
Concerning the quality of products, the company takes ISO9001
quality system certification as the guideline for its quality
control. All the subsidiaries of the company have passed ISO9001
certification.
The company is now constructing an optical cable-manufacturing
base in Chengdu to produce all types of optical cables and
coaxial cables. Its manufacturing capability is already as much
as l8,000 kilometers of cable per annum at present and will
eventually reach 900,000 kilometers. It has also built an
assembly line capable of producing 110 million IC modules per
annum.
According to an IDC Asia-Pacific research, the information
technology (IT) market in China, supported by its entry into the
WTO, is expected to grow by 25 percent to US$25.6 million in
2002. In the year 2005, the total IT market in that country will
be worth more than US$50 billion, indicating a growth rate of 27
percent per annum since 2001. -- Rikza Abdullah
