Data Security a Priority, AWS Strengthens AI Protection in Indonesia

As the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) expands in Indonesia, data security and public privacy have become primary concerns. During a media briefing for the launch of the ‘Unlocking Indonesia’s AI Potential 2026’ study at the AWS Summit Jakarta 2026, AWS Indonesia Country Manager Anthony Amni stressed that data protection is the foundation for developing AI services on the AWS platform. Amni explained that one of the technologies used is Amazon Bedrock, a service providing access to various foundation models for building generative AI applications. He stated that all data customers input into the AI models via Amazon Bedrock remains within the AWS environment and is not reused by model providers to train their own AI systems. ‘We bring the models into the customer’s environment on AWS. The data sent by the customer to the model is not used by the model provider for training processes. The data stays in the customer’s environment,’ Amni said. He emphasised that this approach differentiates AWS from some other AI services that may utilise user data to improve model performance. In its implementation, AWS applies a shared responsibility model, where AWS is responsible for the security of the cloud infrastructure and its underlying technologies, while customers are responsible for managing the applications and data they build on top of the cloud services. Nonetheless, AWS provides various security tools to help customers protect their systems, including encryption features for data both at rest and in motion, aiming to minimise the risk of data leaks during AI operations. To ensure security practices are applied optimally, Anthony noted that AWS has a team of Security Solutions Architects who specifically assist customers in implementing AI technology. This team brings best practices to help companies build secure systems, ensure data flows remain protected, and reduce the potential for information leaks during operations. Beyond technical security, AWS also affirmed that all customer data running in the AWS Jakarta Region remains in Indonesia by default. This policy is considered crucial for helping organisations meet regulatory compliance requirements and providing certainty regarding data residency. The issue of AI governance is one of the main challenges in technology adoption. The ‘Unlocking Indonesia’s AI Potential 2026’ study indicates that many companies still need a robust AI governance foundation to ensure AI implementation is secure, responsible, and delivers long-term business value.
