Data Governance Becomes Key Homework for AI Implementation in the Oil and Gas Industry
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – The utilisation of artificial intelligence (AI) in the oil and gas (migas) industry indeed promises efficiency and major transformation. However, behind its potential, there are still several challenges that need to be addressed. This was stated by Oil and Gas Industry Principal at Aveva, Cindy Crow, in an exclusive interview with KompasTekno on Monday (13/4/2026). Aveva is a UK-based provider of software solutions and digital platforms. Cindy said that the biggest AI challenge facing the migas industry currently is a company’s readiness and data governance. “As a result, AI cannot deliver optimal results because it depends on the quality of the data being analysed,” Cindy told KompasTekno at the Ritz Carlton Pacific Place in South Jakarta. This is what makes data governance quite important when companies in the migas industry want to implement AI into their systems. Without this foundation, AI implementation risks producing inaccurate insights, which can even mislead decision-making and make everything inefficient. Besides data issues, another challenge comes from the use of the technology itself. Cindy assesses that the biggest risk does not come from AI, but from the people operating and managing it. Errors in usage, lack of understanding, and security gaps can arise if the system is not managed properly. “I’m actually not too worried about AI. I’m more concerned about what people do with the technology, and there are many security risks if technology like this is misused,” Cindy revealed. Nevertheless, AI can also be part of the solution to address those risks, if businesspeople in the migas industry use the right AI tools. Aveva has all the relevant AI tools for the migas industry, from software named Aveva Connect, PI System, Unified Engineering, Operations Control, Enterprise Resource Management, and many more. Cindy said that the use of AI in the migas industry going forward will increasingly develop and integrate with business operations.
