Connectivity amongst the community is one of the government’s priorities in post-flood recovery efforts following the disaster that struck Sumatra in late 2025. Tito Karnavian, head of the Task Force for Accelerated Rehabilitation and Reconstruction (Satgas PRR) and Minister of the Interior, stated that as transportation networks are restored, public mobility, logistics distribution, and economic activity will return to normal.

Towards this goal, Satgas PRR is constructing numerous emergency bridges including Bailey bridges, Armco bridges, and pioneer bridges at various isolated points. As of 11 March 2026, approximately 62 per cent of bridge construction in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra has been completed and is passable again.

In Aceh, 116 bridges will be constructed, comprising 42 Bailey bridge units, 41 Armco bridges, and 33 pioneer or suspension bridges. Of this total, 94 units have been completed whilst 22 others remain under installation.

The bridge construction team consists of Army (TNI AD) and Police (Polri) personnel, both integrated into Satgas PRR. In Aceh, TNI AD is handling construction of 38 Bailey bridges with 28 units completed. Additionally, of the 41 Armco bridges being constructed, 38 units are finished. For pioneer bridges, of the 15 units being built, 7 units remain under construction.

The Police force is constructing 4 Bailey bridges with 3 units completed. There are also 18 pioneer bridges being constructed by Polri, with only 1 unit still in progress.

In North Sumatra, Satgas PRR has completed 25 bridges out of a total target of 59 units. In detail, TNI AD is working on 22 Bailey bridges with 5 units completed. Additionally, there are 19 Armco bridges under construction, with 8 units still in progress. For pioneer bridges, of the 13 units being constructed, 5 units are usable.

For the Police, in this province they are constructing 5 pioneer bridges with only one still in progress.

In West Sumatra, the government is targeting construction of 62 bridge units, with 29 units completed. TNI AD has finished 11 Bailey bridge units. Additionally, there are 30 Armco bridges under construction, with 6 units completed, 8 units in the installation phase, and 16 units in transport to site. For pioneer bridges, all 9 units remain under construction.

Meanwhile, all bridges being constructed by Polri in West Sumatra have been completed, comprising 2 Bailey bridge units and 10 pioneer bridges. Thus, the total number of bridges being constructed across the three affected provinces reaches 237 units, with 148 units having been completed.

Satgas PRR continues to accelerate construction of various infrastructure so that community life can return to normal quickly. In addition to constructing Bailey, Armco, and pioneer bridges, task force head Tito Karnavian is also pushing for permanent bridge construction in disaster-affected areas.

“In recovery efforts, what will be made permanent are the bridges, then roads that are currently still functional in nature,” said Tito during his visit to Aceh on Friday, 6 March 2026.

Moreover, with fewer than 10 days remaining before Muslims celebrate Eid al-Fitr, Satgas PRR hopes that through this acceleration they can lighten the burden of the affected community so they can welcome and celebrate this significant moment for the Islamic faith with greater peace of mind.

Beyond infrastructure, acceleration of recovery is also moving across all indicators such as government administration, basic public services, economic activity, and community basic needs. This effort is being pursued through intensive coordination with ministries and agencies as well as regional governments.
