Data Determines Business: It's Time to Master It Now

Amid the proliferation of online shopping conveniences and instant digital services, the public often sees only the end results without realising the primary “engine” operating behind the scenes. Yet, there is one crucial element that forms the foundation of the entire ecosystem: the database. This system manages millions of pieces of information in seconds, ensuring every transaction runs quickly, accurately, and securely.

From my perspective as Chair of the Digital Business Study Programme at Universitas Nusa Mandiri (UNM), known as the Digital Business Campus, databases are not merely technical components but strategic foundations in building modern digital businesses. Data today has transformed into a high-value asset. It is no longer understood as a mere collection of numbers but as a source of insights that determine business decisions.

This reality demands a shift in mindset within higher education. Students cannot suffice as mere technology users; they must understand how data works, is managed, and utilised to create value. This is the basis for our introduction of applied and contextual database learning.

Through a project-based learning approach, students do not just learn theory but engage directly in real-world simulations. They build digital systems, design databases, and understand how platforms can provide product recommendations, manage large-scale transactions, and safeguard user data. This approach is essential because the industry does not only need understanding of “how it works” but also “why it is important”.

Here lies the major shift in digital business education. Mastery of databases is no longer an additional skill but a core competency. Students are trained to think systematically, understand data logic, and link it to business strategies. They learn to read consumer behaviour, predict trends, and design data-based solutions relevant to market needs.

Furthermore, the integration of technical and business aspects is key to creating competitiveness. Companies today do not only seek individuals who can operate systems but those who can translate data into strategic decisions. This capability can only be formed through learning that holistically unites technology and business insights.

As the Digital Business Campus, UNM is committed to producing graduates who are not merely adaptive to technology but capable of being innovators. Graduates are expected to stand at the forefront of digital transformation not as spectators but as drivers of change.

We cannot close our eyes to the fact that the future of business will be increasingly determined by data. Those who can manage, read, and utilise it appropriately will excel. Conversely, those who neglect data will fall behind in the increasingly fierce competition.

Therefore, the younger generation needs to build awareness from an early stage that understanding data is no longer a choice but a necessity. The digital world does not wait, and opportunities will only come to those who are prepared.

In the end, data is not just technology; it is the new language in the business world. And those who can “speak” this language will determine the direction of the future.
