Data Centres Under Heavy Attack, This Nation Faces Threat of Paralysis
The armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine is escalating. Russian forces are reported to have launched massive, successive attacks directly targeting vital communication infrastructure and major data centres in Ukraine.
The latest attack on Sunday (27/9) local time hit the headquarters of Kyivstar, Ukraine’s largest mobile operator, located in the capital, Kyiv.
Quoting Reuters on Monday (2-8/9/2026), Kyivstar management confirmed that their headquarters building was targeted by missile strikes. However, the company ensured there were no fatalities or injuries resulting from the incident.
On the same day, the Russian Ministry of Defence claimed success in launching separate attacks against data centre facilities belonging to Vodafone Ukraine, the country’s second-largest mobile operator. As of the time of this report, Vodafone Ukraine has yet to provide an official response regarding these claims.
Threat of Paralysis to Information Flow and Citizen Safety
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed that a critical data centre in Kyiv was even hit twice in succession by the Russian military on Sunday morning. This series of brutal attacks is reported to have not only damaged digital infrastructure but also resulted in civilian casualties, including injuries to two children and one adult.
Military records indicate that Russia has been systematically intensifying attacks on data centres belonging to various internet service providers in Ukraine over the past week.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Digital Transformation stated that this wave of cyber and physical attacks has triggered severe telecommunications service disruptions, directly impacting around 100,000 households in the Kyiv region and its surroundings.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha strongly condemned Moscow’s military actions, which deliberately aim to sever the nation’s digital information arteries.
“Russia has targeted Ukraine’s main data centres, attempting to disrupt the flow of information. Rapid warnings regarding missile and drone threats are vital; such warnings save lives,” Sybiha asserted via his official account on X (formerly Twitter).
