Dasco: Share Buybacks a Strategic Opportunity Amid Market Downturn
Indonesian House of Representatives Deputy Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad considers the share buyback actions undertaken by a number of companies to be a reasonable response amidst market fluctuations. According to him, many strategic companies in Indonesia have strong fundamentals so that buyback actions can be an option when share prices experience a decline. Dasco said strategic companies, both state-owned enterprises (BUMN) and national private firms, still maintain good prospects even though the market has been under pressure recently. “Yes, actually BUMN and private companies with strategic projects have strong fundamentals,” Dasco said at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Thursday (11/6/2026). According to Dasco, the condition of falling share prices can actually be utilised by companies and investors to conduct share buybacks. The move is considered strategic because it is carried out when share valuations are at a lower level. He assesses that investment institutions and retail stock market players will see the momentum of price declines as an opportunity to make purchase transactions for shares with strong fundamentals. “So, when the market was declining yesterday, of course, for example, BUMN or Himbara conducting buybacks, or investment institutions and the market seeing that it is very strategic to repurchase or carry out purchase transactions in yesterday’s market conditions,” he said.
