Dasco: New Employment Law Targeted for Completion by End of 2026
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives Sufmi Dasco Ahmad stated that the government and DPR have agreed to target the completion of a new Employment Law by no later than the end of 2026.
“The government and DPR have agreed that by the end of this year at the latest, we will implement the Constitutional Court’s decision to form a new Employment Law,” Dasco said at the DPR building on Friday (1/5/2026).
He explained that the preparation of the law is a mandate from the Constitutional Court (MK) decision, so it is not merely a revision of the old regulations, but the formation of a comprehensive new law.
According to Dasco, the initial formulation process will involve labour groups and employers extensively.
The DPR will await the results of discussions between the two parties before bringing the draft to parliament.
“This is a new law, not revising the old one. So the materials will actually be requested from our labour friends on what needs to be included,” he said.
Once the formulation is deemed mature, the DPR together with the government will begin formal discussions.
“Then, if it is mature there, it will be brought to the DPR, and we will discuss it together with the government,” Dasco said.
Dasco explained that the involvement of labour in the drafting process will be expanded so that the resulting law does not face further challenges at the MK.
“So that the law is not wasteful and not challenged again at the MK, our labour friends will also be heavily involved in the drafting team,” he stated.
Based on Kompas.com observations, representatives of workers, civil society organisations, and students who are part of the Gerakan Buruh Bersama Rakyat (Gebrak) movement were allowed to enter the parliamentary complex and directed to the Abdul Muis Room in the Nusantara Building.
In that audience, the labour masses were received by Dasco along with other Deputy Speakers, Cucun Ahmad Syamsurijal. Also present were leaders and members of Commission IX of the DPR, which handles employment matters.
The labour action in front of the DPR was held to urge the government and DPR to immediately form a new Employment Law, especially after the MK’s decision regarding the Job Creation Law.
General Chairman of KASBI Sunarno said that the action was part of the Aliansi Gerakan Buruh Bersama Rakyat (Gebrak) and different from the May Day Fiesta commemoration held in the Monas area.
“Today we are holding an action at the DPR building together with Gebrak friends. We come to urge the DPR to immediately discuss the new Employment Bill by involving labour unions,” Sunarno said.
He assessed that the formation of the Employment Law is important because it concerns various crucial aspects for workers, such as the wage system, severance pay, and employment relationship status.
