Dasco Denies Amnesty Signal Behind Birthday Greeting for Nadiem

House Deputy Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad has stated that he had no ulterior motive behind his birthday greeting to former Education and Culture Minister Nadiem Makarim, who is now a defendant in an alleged corruption case involving the procurement of Chromebook laptops.

He acknowledged that many parties had questioned his post, which he uploaded to his social media account. When asked about the potential for granting amnesty to Nadiem, he did not confirm the matter.

“I am also confused about how to answer it. Because actually, there was no such intention,” Dasco said at the parliamentary complex in Jakarta on Monday, 6 July 2026.

According to him, the current manager of his social media account is getting into the habit of wishing a number of public figures a happy birthday, including Nadiem and other figures.

“So my new admin is now getting used to wishing every figure who has a birthday a happy birthday greeting on my account,” he said.

When asked about providing legal assistance, he suggested that Nadiem is already being represented by a lawyer handling his case.

“Surely that has already been done by his lawyer. Why would I provide legal aid?” he said.

On Saturday, 4 July 2026, Dasco uploaded a birthday greeting photo via his official Instagram account @sufmi_dasco, with a caption addressed to Nadiem. The post subsequently drew various comments from Instagram users.
