Dasco: Criticism over Haze Must Be Answered with Work That Can Be Tested
Jakarta (ANTARA) – Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Sufmi Dasco Ahmad said Indonesia had heard the concerns and criticism voiced by Malaysia and Singapore over transboundary haze caused by forest and land fires.
“Criticism should not be met with offence; it should be answered with work that can be tested,” Dasco said in a speech marking the 98th anniversary of the Youth Pledge at the parliamentary complex in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Dasco said the House of Representatives appreciated the attention of neighbouring countries without necessarily accepting every assessment they made. The most important priorities, he said, were protecting affected residents, strengthening prevention and law enforcement, and restoring the environment.
He emphasised that Indonesia must remain committed to its independent and active foreign policy: it should not become an extension of any country’s interests, but should remain open to cooperation.
On defence, he said an active defensive posture meant remaining vigilant, being able to deter threats and taking measured initiatives without seeking confrontation.
“We must be resolute in safeguarding sovereignty while exercising wisdom in preserving peace,” he said.
“We cannot choose our neighbours, but we can choose how to be neighbours: respecting one another, speaking frankly and seeking solutions together,” Dasco said.
