Daryono Resigns as BMKG Earthquake Director

In a written statement to the media, Daryono requested that his name no longer be attributed with the title of BMKG Director of Earthquakes and Tsunamis in news coverage. He did not specify the reasons for his resignation. “Through this message, I wish to convey that I have submitted my resignation as Director of Earthquakes and Tsunamis, while also applying for early retirement from BMKG,” Daryono wrote on Friday, February 13, 2026. Nevertheless, he affirmed that his commitment to public education in the fields of seismology and disaster preparedness would not cease. Daryono has long been recognized as a figure who frequently provides scientific explanations to the public regarding earthquakes and potential tsunamis. He cited a sense of scientific, educational, and moral responsibility in a disaster-prone country like Indonesia. As such, he remains open to serving as an expert source on earthquakes and tsunamis. For the time being, Daryono has chosen to be referred to as an earthquake and tsunami observer. According to the information provided, Daryono remains officially active at BMKG until May 1, 2026.
