Daop 1 backs Karawang Regency plan to build tunnels at level crossings
The programme will also empower local communities through its recruitment, although a selection and certification process by KAI will still apply to ensure competence.
Karawang (ANTARA) - PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) Daop 1 Jakarta is supporting a move by the Karawang Regency Government in West Java, which plans to build tunnel roads (underpasses) at railway level crossings in the Kosambi and Cikampek areas.
“In this programme to improve safety facilities at level crossings, we at KAI indeed need to collaborate with regional governments,” said Istadi, Deputy II of PT KAI Daop 1 Jakarta, in Karawang on Tuesday.
He said Daop 1 is currently intensifying a programme to upgrade safety facilities at 33 level crossings passable by four-wheeled vehicles across the Daop 1 Jakarta area.
The programme includes a number of supporting safety facilities, to be implemented in stages according to field conditions and the technical requirements of each crossing.
“This programme will also empower local communities through its recruitment. However, there will still be a selection and certification process by KAI to ensure competence,” said Istadi.
The level crossing facility improvement programme is part of KAI’s efforts to create safe rail travel while enhancing protection for people carrying out activities around railway lines.
He said that in implementing the safety facility improvement programme at rail level crossings, the company needs to collaborate with regional governments.
“Regarding this collaboration, we would like to thank the Karawang Regency Government,” said Istadi.
In Karawang specifically, the plan to build tunnel roads has been discussed for two level crossings, namely in the Kosambi and Cikampek areas.
Those two level crossings are considered in need of safety facility improvements through tunnel construction, as traffic flows at both crossings are currently extremely busy.
“The plan was initiated by the Karawang Regency Government, so we are very grateful. We at KAI will support the implementation of that initiative,” said Istadi.
