Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Danantara and head of the SOE Supervisory Agency (BP BUMN), Dony Oskaria, said that PT Industri Kereta Api (INKA) must undergo transformation to meet domestic demand for rail transport and move towards industrialisation.

“We also have to see that, in order to move towards industrialisation, INKA must also transform. It cannot be with poor quality, it simply cannot. That is why I have already summoned INKA’s directors; going forward, INKA must also transform,” Dony said in Jakarta on Thursday.

This comes as officials consider using domestically produced rolling stock from INKA to cover the additional trainsets needed to operate Jabodetabek KRL commuter services, alongside a proposal to import used trainsets from Japan.

“All state-owned enterprises must transform; they cannot survive in the condition they are in today. That is why INKA must transform,” he added.

Dony said he would soon meet the Minister of Transportation, Dudy Purwagandhi, to discuss PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero), or KAI, and its plan to import used KRL trainsets from Japan.

He continued that his side supports the plan or exploration by KAI, as it is closely linked to the public transport mobility needs of the community.

“In principle, of course, we support whatever is needed to accelerate our transport. Rail is one of the public transformations the government hopes will bring many (positive) benefits,” Dony said.

He believed that if public transport functions well, air pollution would fall, along with the consumption of fuel oil (BBM).

“In principle we are very supportive. We will simply need to meet with the President Director of KAI to determine how many units KAI requires to meet the needs of our people,” Dony said.

Earlier, PT KAI proposed importing used KRL trainsets from Japan. The proposal was presented directly by KAI’s President Director, Bobby Rasyidin, to Commission VI of the House of Representatives (DPR RI), which approved it.

Bobby said the company needs an additional 23 trainsets to operate Jabodetabek KRL services, which it plans to fulfil through the procurement of used KRL.

The requirement is divided into two categories: first, seven trainsets in 12-car formation (SF12), and second, 16 trainsets in eight-car formation (SF8), as the need for additional fleet has emerged alongside a surge in KRL Jabodetabek passengers.
