Danantara CEO Reveals Former Hotel Sultan to Be Redeveloped as New Indonesian Icon

Jakarta - Minister of Investment and Downstreaming/Head of BKPM and CEO of Danantara, Rosan Roeslani, has revealed the government’s major plan to reorganise the former Hotel Sultan area in Blok 15, Gelora Bung Karno (GBK), Jakarta. The area is projected to become a new icon for Indonesia as well as a new centre of economic growth in the capital city. The statement was made by Rosan after attending a meeting with President Prabowo Subianto at the Presidential Palace complex in Jakarta on Monday, 22 June 2026. According to Rosan, the government is currently finalising the development concept for the area. However, he indicated that the former Hotel Sultan building will eventually be demolished as part of the comprehensive redevelopment of the area. “At this moment, I may not be able to say, but the plan is to turn it into a new area. Eventually, yes (the former Hotel Sultan will be demolished),” Rosan said. He explained that President Prabowo has mandated that the GBK complex, including the former Hotel Sultan area, be developed into a new symbol of Indonesia with international appeal. Therefore, the planning process must be carried out meticulously, comprehensively, and provide tangible benefits to the community. Rosan added that the development will not only focus on the former Hotel Sultan area but will encompass the entire GBK complex, which spans approximately 200 hectares. The area will be redesigned to support the concept of international-standard sports tourism. According to him, the existing sports facilities will be retained but upgraded in quality to compete with world-class sports complexes. “Perhaps it is still too early for me to convey this, but everything is there because it is about sports. So, GBK will remain, but everything will be enhanced and perfected to an international or world-class standard, so that it can also provide a new economic centre in Jakarta,” said Rosan. The government hopes that the redevelopment of the GBK area and the former Hotel Sultan will become a strategic project that not only strengthens the sports and tourism sectors but also creates a new centre of economic activity that provides broad benefits to the community and enhances Indonesia’s image globally.
