Damages sought for marine pollution

JAKARTA: Indonesia plans to seek damages from a Singaporean company for marine pollution resulting from the sinking of one of its ships off the Karimun islands in Riau.

State Minister for the Environment Nabiel Makarim said on Wednesday he would discuss the issue with his Singaporean counterpart.

"We are evaluating the situation and plan to seek damages," Nabiel said after meeting with President Megawati Soekarnoputri.

The Singaporean flagged vessel sank on July 25. It remains unclear whether it was carrying oil or toxic waste.--JP
