Damaged Alloy Wheels Can Be Repaired: Learn About the 'Adding Material' Process

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – One common issue with car alloy wheels is chipping or damage to the rim, also known as “rompal,” where the edge of the wheel is eroded or missing due to impact with pavements, potholes, or other hard objects.

At first glance, it may seem insignificant, but damaged alloy wheels should not be ignored. In addition to affecting the appearance, this damage can affect tyre pressure and pose a risk of causing slow leaks.

“‘Adding material’ is when a part of the wheel is missing, or in other words, chipped,” Runang told Kompas.com in Jakarta on Tuesday (24/2/2026).

“So when there is material that is eroded or missing, that part is restored using a welding machine, and then smoothed so that the shape returns to its original condition,” he said.

“The material used is the same,” said Runang.

This method is relatively more economical than replacing the wheel with a new one, especially if the damage only occurs on the outer rim and does not damage the main structure of the wheel.

Car owners are advised to have chipped wheels checked immediately before the damage spreads. Faster handling makes the repair process simpler and keeps costs down.
