Dam in Poso, Central Sulawesi Collapses, Dozens of Homes Flooded
The river bank protection dam in Betalemba Village, South Poso Coast Subdistrict, Poso Regency, Central Sulawesi (Sulteng) burst due to heavy rainfall, flooding 25 residents’ homes.
Acting Head of Central Sulawesi Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Asbudianto, stated on Sunday (31 May) that the flooding was caused by the dam breach affecting 25 homes.
The incident occurred on Saturday (30 May) around 5:30 PM WITA. Increased river discharge and overflow caused the dam to collapse, leading to flooded homes.
“The strong river current caused the dam in Betalemba Village to collapse, with water entering residential areas and flooding dozens of homes,” he said.
The flood also flooded roads serving as access routes to various parts of Poso Regency.
“This situation temporarily disrupted community activities. However, BPBD teams have conducted assessments and data collection and coordinated with local authorities,” he added.
Despite the disaster, there were no casualties or evacuations reported.
“The flood has since receded. There were no fatalities or displaced residents due to the flooding,” he concluded.
