Dalung-Tibubeneng Bridge Repair Begins, Box Culvert Installation Underway
The Public Works and Spatial Planning Office (PUPR) of Badung Regency has commenced physical repair work on the bridge connecting Banjar Pegending (Dalung) and Padonan Customary Village (Tibubeneng) in North Kuta District, which suffered complete collapse. Workers began installing a box culvert—a reinforced concrete drainage pipe—at the project site on Monday, 9 March 2026.
“Repair work has started today. Our team is also currently installing pipe networks around the water channel,” stated one of the workers on site on Monday.
Observations at the location showed the installation of prefabricated concrete elements proceeding in parallel with water channel arrangements. Once this phase is completed, the project implementers will proceed with soil compaction before finally applying a new asphalt layer.
The bridge completely collapsed on Saturday, 14 February 2026 owing to scour from the Campuhan River. The old structure, which still utilised stone masonry construction, was assessed as deteriorated with age and unable to withstand high water discharge.
“We are replacing the bridge’s culvert from stone masonry with a box culvert. This choice was made because the old stone masonry structure was no longer serviceable or utilised outdated technology,” explained I Putu Teddy Widnyana Putra, Head of Road Development at Badung Regency’s PUPR.
Teddy clarified that the box culvert material, measuring 3 by 2 metres, was specially ordered from Surabaya, East Java. The project is allocated from the maintenance budget totalling between 1 and 1.5 billion rupiah.
“The bridge’s substructure using stone masonry has indeed deteriorated with age. The road surface quality above had already been improved with new asphalt in 2025,” Teddy explained.
Due to the collapse of this main access route, traffic flow between Dalung and Tibubeneng was disrupted for several weeks. Badung Regency’s PUPR urged the public to remain patient and continue using alternative routes until the asphalt laying process is completed.
