X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, has begun restricting posting volume for users without a blue check or verified accounts. The policy has sparked complaints from long-time users who say it limits activity on the platform. Citing Engadget, several users on X and Reddit reported that the platform has quietly imposed a new limit on non-verified accounts. On X’s help centre page, non-verified accounts are now only allowed to create 50 original posts and 200 replies per day. The rule is far stricter than previous policy; according to cached versions of the same help page, non-verified users could previously post up to 2,400 posts per day. Interestingly, the updated help page still lists the old 2,400 posts per day rule. However, X is said to notify users when they reach the daily posting limit via an in-app error message. The move is suspected to be part of X’s efforts to curb spam and bot activity on the platform. Earlier in October, the company also rolled out the ‘about this account’ feature showing the location of an account to increase user transparency. Nevertheless, the new restricting policy drew criticism from some users who say the rules could drive more people away from the platform. For users who want to post content without strict limits, X offers a paid X Premium service. The cheapest tier, Basic, is priced at US$3 per month or around US$32 per year.
