Daewoo union extends strike
SEOUL (AFP): The union of South Korea's ailing Daewoo Motor
Co. said on Wednesday it would continue at least until Saturday
its wildcat strike in protest against the arrest of union
leaders.
"We have decided to continue striking until Saturday," a
spokesman of the Daewoo Motor union said as the stoppage entered
its second day. "We have yet to make a decision on what to do
after Saturday."
Management of the automaker gave other workers the day off on
Wednesday as striking workers blocked the six gates into the auto
plant in the western town of Bupyong.
Prosecutor-General Park Soon-Yong, meanwhile, warned on
Wednesday of harsh crackdowns on illegal strikes, branding the
stoppage at Daewoo Motor as "illegal".
