Czech Embassy gets new counselor

JAKARTA: A new diplomat who has vast experience in Asian affairs joined the Czech Embassy as its new counselor recently.

Jiri Vobis also holds the post of head of mission at the embassy.

Vobis, 53, is a career diplomat who joined the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1993. He was a counselor in New Delhi (1994-1998) and Islamabad (1999-2002). Prior to his posting in Jakarta, Vobis used to deal with South Asian countries and Afghanistan at the foreign ministry in Prague.

The handsome, busy diplomat, who has a PhD in chemistry, admits to enjoying a few hobbies.

"Because I am still a bachelor, I have lot of time at home to pursue my hobbies, like adventure travel, mountaineering, swimming and Irish music. But I'm always busy in my office," Vobis, who likes Indian and Indonesian food, told The Jakarta Post.

Vobis speaks Czech, English and passive Hindi languages. -- JP
