Cyclist Assaulted by Motorcycle Taxi Driver at Sudirman While Preventing Motorbikes on Bicycle Lane
JAKARTA — A cyclist named Ucup became the victim of an assault by an online motorcycle taxi driver whilst closing off the bicycle lane on Jalan Jenderal Sudirman in South Jakarta on Saturday, 14 March 2026, in the early morning hours.
The incident began when Ucup and several friends were cycling in the Sudirman area. At the time, he had stopped just before a downward slope near the Dukuh Atas area in Jakarta.
“I had already closed off the bicycle lane with existing traffic cones to prevent motorcycles from passing through,” Ucup said when contacted by Kompas.com on Sunday, 15 March 2026.
However, he mentioned that one motorcyclist appeared annoyed and engaged in an argument with him because he wanted to pass through the lane.
“Shortly after, my friend came to join me and stood by on the lane. Initially, my friend and I wanted to leave, but suddenly a man wearing a black helmet and an online taxi jacket accelerated and hit my bicycle, pushing it onto the shoulder of the bicycle lane,” he explained.
Ucup stated that his bicycle was run over by a Yamaha Fazzio motorcycle driven by the man. Upset at seeing his bicycle damaged, Ucup admitted to slapping the online taxi driver’s helmet.
“But my left mouth area got swollen and the inside of my mouth appears torn because it hit my teeth when he punched me,” he said.
Ucup mentioned that the injuries he sustained were treated temporarily with warm water compress.
“I was very angry because my beloved bicycle was simply run over by an online taxi driver,” he explained.
“Perhaps because he couldn’t get through, he got furious, and possibly because I reprimanded him by slapping his helmet,” he added.
Kompas.com attempted to contact the President of Bike to Work Indonesia, Hendro Subroto, and the Head of Law and Regulation Sub-directorate of the Jakarta Metro Police Traffic Directorate, Ojo Ruslani, for their responses regarding the incident. However, as of publication, neither had provided a response.
