JAKARTA — PT Kereta Api Logistik (KAI Logistik) has begun operating Container Yard (CY) 2 Merapi as part of efforts to strengthen national energy distribution based on rail transport. The facility has been operational since 3 March 2026 and represents an expansion of the KALOG Pro service to support coal transport management. KAI Logistik’s President Director, Yuskal Setiawan, stated that the presence of CY 2 Merapi is designed to increase transport capacity while addressing the increasingly dynamic challenges of energy logistics distribution. He explained that the operation of this facility also responds to the South Sumatra Provincial Government’s policy prohibiting coal trucks from traversing public roads since 1 January 2026, as regulated in the Governor of South Sumatra’s Instruction Number 500.11/004/INSTRUCTION/TRANSPORT/2025. CY 2 Merapi is located in Sirah Pulau Village, South Sumatra, adjacent to the earlier-operating CY 1 Merapi. The facility is designed with three entry-exit accesses directly connected to Merapi Terminal, expected to enhance operational efficiency, particularly in the coal loading and unloading process. With the operation of CY 2 Merapi, KAI Logistik targets an increase in transport capacity in line with the initial plan, namely serving up to two train sets per day. In further development, the facility is planned to have two loading tracks to anticipate the increasing volume of coal transport in the Sumatra region. Yuskal mentioned that, in projection, the facility can serve around 730 train sets per year. If the operation of two transport tracks runs optimally, its capacity has the potential to increase to up to 10 train sets per day. To support this capacity increase, KAI Logistik plans to develop facilities and infrastructure gradually. This development includes adding transport equipment, providing operational facilities, and enhancing human resource competencies. The company also emphasises that all operations at CY 2 Merapi will adhere to applicable service standards and the implementation of Occupational Safety and Health (K3) to ensure safe and reliable services. Through the operation of this facility, KAI Logistik affirms its role in supporting national energy distribution, particularly in the coal supply chain, which is one of the main commodities in the energy sector.
