Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Control Agency (KLH/BPLH) together with South Korea and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) launched the ASEAN-Korea Cooperation for Methane Mitigation (AKCMM) project in Jakarta on Thursday, 21 May 2026. The step was taken to strengthen climate action commitments. ‘We’ve just launched this event, and it’s very good because of the hard work together, especially in ASEAN. It is now in Indonesia to reduce methane gas emissions that can destroy the ozone by 28-30 times more than carbon dioxide,’ said Minister of Environment M. Jumhur Hidayat in his speech at the project’s launch. Jumhur said organic waste management is a priority in the national climate targets. With the composition of waste at the landfill (TPA) reaching 63 percent organic material, KLH estimates that Indonesia’s methane emission potential could reach 21 million tonnes CO2. ‘Waste management is not just a cleanliness issue, but a crucial pillar in our climate action. Through this AKCMM project, Indonesia commits to linking practical field solutions with the ambitious methane emission reduction targets. We appreciate Korea’s and ASEAN’s support in strengthening a greener and more sustainable waste management system,’ Jumhur said. AKCMM is a three-year programme worth USD 20 million or around IDR 353 billion under the Partnership for ASEAN-ROK Methane Action (PARMA), supported by South Korea through the ASEAN-Korea Cooperation Fund (AKCF). Indonesia is the third ASEAN country to implement this programme after Malaysia and the Philippines.
